  • Islamic Finance Conference

Speaking at an Islamic Finance Conference organised by KESUMA at the Raffles Convention Centre, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad highlighted the strong potential of Shariah-compliant finance, noting that it can succeed where conventional Western financial systems have fallen short.
He expressed optimism about the growth of Islamic banking in ASEAN, citing the region’s large Muslim population and increasing access to Shariah-compliant capital for business development—without the use of riba (interest). He also noted that Islamic finance is attracting interest beyond Muslim communities and suggested that Singapore could leverage Malaysia’s expertise as a leading Islamic finance hub.
Echoing this outlook, Mr. Sani Hamid, Director of Wealth Management at Financial Alliance, observed that ASEAN is rapidly emerging as a key Islamic finance centre, with Singapore and Hong Kong positioned as gateways for Middle Eastern investment into the region, including sukuk issuance.

  • YESCOM was launched in 2005 by Mr. Maidin Packer, BPM, former Member of Parliament for Kampong Ubi GRC and Senior Parliamentary Secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs. The programme aims to instil an entrepreneurial spirit among youths, from primary to tertiary education levels.

Participants compete in teams of up to ten, progressing through entrepreneurship seminars, workshops, and hands-on business assignments under the guidance of experienced business mentors. The programme culminates in a Grand Finale, where teams showcase and sell their products to the public using a coupon-based system.

Each team is allocated $1,000 worth of coupons to market and sell, with all proceeds retained by the respective teams or schools. Winning teams are recognised with cash prizes and trophies.
